Shell Heavy Lift Program

Project Profile:

The heavy lift program for Shell Carbon Capture and Storage facility was safely and successfully completed as one of the project’s most complex construction scopes. The program involved approximately 200 engineered heavy lifts, including 101 modules, major process vessels, electrical buildings, aerial coolers and critical infrastructure, with module installation completed two months ahead of the original schedule and with uncompromising safety performance.

This case study explores how rigorous lift engineering, disciplined safety planning, field coordination and innovative use of PCL’s Engineered Module Lift Frames enabled the team to execute complex lifts safely and efficiently. The program also leveraged 4D visualization tools to validate crane access, lift sequencing, crane swing paths and potential interferences before execution, supporting informed decision making and stakeholder alignment.

The heavy lift program demonstrates how proactive planning, innovation, collaboration and a strong safety culture can deliver measurable schedule, cost and execution benefits on complex industrial construction projects.
