Join us in our inaugural 2023-24 season for "VOICES: Free Concert Series", a pioneering program by Vancouver Opera, generously supported by TD.

An enchanting evening of music awaits you, where opera, art song, musical theatre, and popular melodies come together to tell stories of the heart. Immerse yourself in an intimate and dynamic performance featuring baritone Danlie Rae Acebuque from the Yolanda M. Faris Young Artist Program, accompanied by an extraordinary group of musicians, including bassist Michael Rush, trombonist Jeremy Berkman, and harpist Janelle Nadeau from the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.Join us for a magical musical journey that celebrates the power of melody, harmony, and improvisation to connect us all. This event is presented by the fledgling No Chamber Music Society, promising a night of collaboration and lyrical storytelling.

Born in Iloilo City, Philippines, baritone Danlie Rae Acebuque moved to Canada in 2011. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance and a Master’s in Opera from the University of Toronto, studying under Canadian soprano Frédérique Vézina.Danlie Rae has been praised for his “warm lower resonance” and “brilliant top end” (Opera Canada) and has received numerous accolades, including the Ivan Alexandor Chorney Opera Scholarship and the Stuart Hamilton Memorial Award.His operatic roles include Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Escamillo (La Tragedie de Carmen), and Dr. Falke (Die Fledermaus). He has also been a soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Carmina Burana.This season, Danlie Rae is a proud member of the Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program with Vancouver Opera. Outside of music, he enjoys baking, cooking, and exploring diverse street foods.

Trombonist Jeremy Berkman is, with harpist Janelle Nadeau, a co-Artistic Director of the No Chamber Music Society, with whom he co-founded with Flutist Laura Vanek in 2021 as a pandemic effort to bring neighbors together with live music in a healthy and safe way. Currently the Principal Trombonist of Vancouver Opera’s orchestra, Jeremy is now thrilled to develop new projects that align with his values of building communities of those who share an experience of gathering to listen and/or participate in music-making. Jeremy is also the trombonist and Director of Outreach for Vancouver’s award winning Turning Point Ensemble (TPE), which he co-founded with his musical colleagues in 2002, and which has recorded six cds, toured nationally and internationally, and currently presenting its 21st subscription season. Jeremy is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and Oberlin Conservatory and College (with degrees in music and economic). In addition to his performances with Vancouver Opera and TPE, Jeremy is a member of the sackbut-centred Cappella Borealis and has been extremely fortunate to participate in many exciting musical adventures with Early Music Vancouver. Jeremy has contributed to over 40 commercially released recordings and is featured with the Bozzini String Quartet in Still Image (music of Owen Underhill) on the Centerdisc label. With The Peggy Lee Band, led by cellist Peggy Lee, he has toured nationally and internationally, and as a band member been nominated for a Juno Award. Though very blessed to perform on many large stages, it is maybe a post pandemic newly important value for Jeremy to find more opportunities to perform for smaller numbers of listeners in more intimate settings, and he is thrilled to be developing this program with Janelle, Michael, and Danlie for you tonight.

Janelle Nadeau is a nationally renowned harpist who has shared the stage with music luminaries including Diana Krall, Harry Connick Jr, The Who, Kanye West and more. Her awe-inspiring performances led to her role as the principle harpist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and the Turning Point Ensemble. She performs regularly with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and past performances include: the World Harp Congress, American Harp Society Conference, Celebrity Cruises, the National Youth Symphony of Canada including a decade with Winter Harp and beyond. Janelle has been touring since she was 19 years old and has made her way across Canada and has toured internationally to the United States, Asia and Europe. She believes in the healing power of music and through her work with Health Arts Society, she has performed more than 400 solo concerts in hospitals and palliative care homes. Born and raised on a farm in Manitoba, Janelle returns every year to work on the farm during harvest with her two young sons.

An accomplished double bassist and composer/arranger, Michael Rush has established himself as a versatile and in-demand musician competent in Jazz, Blues, Salsa, Rock and Folk music. Having performed in Europe and across the United States and Canada, he has brought his expertise and skills to dozens of internationally acclaimed albums. He studied in New York with bassists Joe Martin (Jane Monheit) and Scott Colley (Herbie Hancock) as well as Drew Gress and Matt Brewer. Since then he has gone on to play with an impressive cast of musicians both locally and internationally. He has performed or recorded with Dan Brubeck (the son of jazz musician Dave Brubeck), Randy Porter, David Valdez, Tom Beckham, Mike Allen, Brad Turner, The Jillian Lebeck Trio, The Bruno Hubert Trio, and The Miles Black Trio, as well as with his own projects such as Michael Rush and the Four Hornsmen and Queso Blanco, which was nominated for a CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award in 2009.
