Sip and Learn is an ongoing lecture series hosted in bars across Toronto, where professors deliver 45-minute lectures followed by a Q and A, giving people access to scholarship beyond what they do professionally while still being out for the evening.

This lecture looks at empathy as one of the ways people make sense of care, connection, and being understood. Now that machines are learning to respond with warmth, attention, and emotional awareness, it raises new questions about what people expect from technology and what they still need from each other.When we have a question about our day, our mood, a recipe, we take it to AI before we take it to another person. A strange mole on your back used to become a call to your sister, your friend, your mother, someone who would worry with you, laugh with you, or tell you to go to the doctor. It’s more convenient for sure, but it also changes the meaning of empathy when care becomes instantly available.If you’ve ever felt comforted by a response on your phone, or wondered why technology can sometimes feel easier to turn to than another person, this lecture gives you a way to understand what is happening.Michael Inzlicht is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto and the Rotman School of Management, and Research Lead at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. He is also the author of <a href="https://www.speakandregret.michaelinzlicht.com/about" title="https://www.speakandregret.michaelinzlicht.com/about" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Speak Now, Regret Later</a>, where he writes articles that offer an unfiltered exploration of psychology, culture, and the world. His work explores motivation, emotion, empathy, and how digital technologies are reshaping behavior and wellbeing.<h3>Agenda</h3>6:00 p.m. - Arrival.
