A grassroots, women-led, migrant-driven non-profit arts organization, Cinevolution has been committed to making experimental film and media art accessible for all since 2007, with a particular focus on connecting and empowering immigrants and other historically marginalized communities through community festivals, participatory media art projects, film screenings, workshops, and live performance events.

Want to make better videos but intimidated by expensive equipment and fancy software? Join us in the Richmond Media Lab to learn the hyper-creative, environmentally friendly, punk-chic practice of small file filmmaking!During this hands-on workshop, you will learn:<ul><li>storyboarding basics</li><li>introductory filming techniques</li><li>video and audio editing techniques</li><li>the ethos and aesthetics of small files and eco-conscious filmmaking</li></ul>Guided by artist Joey Malbon, discover how to make original videos using accessible technologies, each file no larger than 1.44 MB per minute.Who is this workshop for?Anyone! Youth, Adults, and Seniors all welcome. No prior filmmaking experience required.Why small files?Because streaming media is killing the planet. Networks, data centers, and devices contribute a whopping 4% of greenhouse gas emissions – and with the cutting of environmental safeguards across the globe, that number is rapidly increasing. The workshop offers a creative and political response to the high-bandwidth demands of 4K media, grounded in a commitment to sustainable, small-file aesthetics.AcknowledgementsThis workshop is presented by Cinevolution, in partnership with the Richmond Media Lab and Small File Media Society.
