SMLS - Regulating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Alberta

The Canadian Institute of Resources Law is the leading national centre of expertise on legal and policy issues relating to Canada's natural resources. Since its establishment in 1979, the Institute has pursued a three-fold mandate of research, education and publication. The Institute initiates projects and responds to requests from the public and private sectors and from non-governmental organizations.

The Canadian Institute of Resources Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary invites you to the following free, public legal education workshop:Regulating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in AlbertaTo reduce the level of provincial greenhouse gas emissions, the Alberta government has signed a SMR Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal government and other provincial governments. In their presentation, panel members Jason Donev, Martin Olszynski, and Allan Ingelson will examine small modular reactors, explore the timelines and pathways for deployment, operational considerations, and the provincial and federal regulatory frameworks. They will discuss important issues such as nuclear waste management, water use, GHG emissions and SMR developments in other countries.This workshop will be offered both in person and online. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentations. Coffee and tea will be served to those attending in Murray Fraser Hall.About the PresentersDr. Jason Donev (BSc, MSc, PhD) is a tenured Professor at the University of Calgary in the department of Physics and Astronomy. He specializes in physics and nuclear power and has received awards for teaching and outreach both nationally and at the University of Calgary. Dr. Donev talks with advocates and interested parties all over the political spectrum about various energy issues, including topics of nuclear power and climate change.Professor Allan Ingelson (BA, BSc, JD, LLM) is the Executive Director of the Canadian Institute of Resources Law. His research focuses on the regulation of energy development. For decades, Professor Ingelson has made presentations around the world and has instructed courses in energy and environmental law offered by the Faculty of Law, Haskayne School of Business and School of Public Policy.Professor Martin Olszynski (BSc, LLB, LLM) is the Chair in Energy, Resources &amp; Sustainability. With a focus on environmental law and policy, he has published extensively and served as a witness and counsel in significant legal and regulatory proceedings, including before the Supreme Court of Canada. He is currently pursuing a PhD in resource management at the University of British Columbia.
