Student Spaceflight Experiments Program Student Finalist Presentations

SFU Faculty of Science

Hear from our student finalists from our Student Spaceflight Experiments Program and ask questions about their experiments!

SFU Science and School District 43 (SD43) Coquitlam present:Student Finalists of our Student Spaceflight Experiments Program Learn about the experiment proposals from SD43 that were proposed to go into space, where students explored the effects of microgravity on a number of scientific questions. One experiment will go to the International Space Station! Hear from our student finalists from Dr. Charles Best Secondary, Port Moody Secondary and Hillcrest Middle School — this is your chance to ask them questions about their spaceflight experiments!
This event is put on by SFU Science in collaboration with Science Rendezvous, the Burnaby Festival of Learning, and SD43.
*This event is intended for those of elementary and high school age*
Additional Information
This school year, students in Grade 4/5 to 12 in Coquitlam School District participated in the Student Spaceflights Experiments Program (SSEP). Three finalist experiment proposals were identified with one selected to be conducted in microgravity conditions on the International Space Station.Growing Bacillus subtilis Using Nutrient Agar in MicrogravityMarisa Bassetto and Selina Zhang, Grade 8, Hillcrest Middle School

With our experiment we want to find out if growing Bacillus subtilis in microgravity will be different from growing it on Earth. By sending B. subtilis into space and seeing if it grows properly, we can learn whether it can be used to help plants or food grow in space.

The Effects of Microgravity on the Growth Pattern and Germination of BuckwheatJisong Han, Grade 10, Dr. Charles Best Secondary School

In this experiment, buckwheat seeds will be sent up to space and water will initiate their germination process. This investigation will provide data about the germination of buckwheat in microgravity which could contribute to the acknowledgement of the potential merits that planting buckwheat offers to space exploration.

The Changes in Beneficial Metabolites by Lactic Acid Bacteria in MicrogravityJ.E. (Jong-eun) Lee and Yong Lee, Grade 9, Port Moody Secondary School

The investigation—to be sent to the International Space Station—will look at the effect of microgravity in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by Lactobacillus casei (HA-108), Lactobacillus rhamnosus (HA-111), Lactobacillus acidophilus (HA-122), and Bifidobacterium longum (HA-135) in the fermentation of prebiotic fibers present in chia (Salvia hispanica) seeds.
