This webinar will focus on how supporting OE practice from the library supports both social justice and pedagogical innovation.

About this Event

Higher education promises to be a vehicle for economic and social mobility; however, this promise increasingly goes begging as our institutions are subtly structured to reinforce existing inequalities, with engagement, persistence, and achievement still closely tied to affordability. The oft-heard institutional claim to be student-centered is similarly hypocritical, as it is usually faculty, accreditation requirements, and budgetary constraints that dictate both the structure and content of the learning experience. It is against the backdrop of these paradoxes that open education practices have emerged as a transformational force in higher education. Open educational practices (OEP) encompass the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open educational resources as well as a range of open pedagogies through which students are empowered as co-creators of knowledge. This presentation will draw on a diverse set of examples to make a case for why the shift away from traditional (closed) practices is not only desirable but also inevitable, and how supporting OEP from the library supports both social justice and pedagogical innovation.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani is the Associate Vice Provost, Open Education at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia. He is an internationally known advocate for open education whose research and practice focuses on open educational resources, student-centered pedagogies, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Rajiv is a recipient of the Robert E. Knox Master Teacher Award from the University of British Columbia, the Dean of Arts Teaching Excellence award at KPU, and the award for Excellence in Open Education from BCcampus. Rajiv is a co-founder of the Open Pedagogy Notebook, an Ambassador for the Center for Open Science, serves on the BC Open Education Advisory Committee, and on the boards of Virtually Connecting, NOBA Psychology, Ubiquity Proceedings, and KDocs Film Festival. He formerly served as a Special Advisor to the Provost on Open Education and a Psychology Instructor at KPU, Open Education Advisor and Senior Open Education Research & Advocacy Fellow with BCcampus, a Faculty Workshop Facilitator with the Open Textbook Network, and a Faculty Fellow with the BC Open Textbook Project. A co-author of three open textbooks in Psychology, his most recent book is Open: The Philosophy and Practices that are Revolutionizing Education and Science (2017).
