This symposium is intended for field operations, engineering, integrity personnel and service professionals who influence pipeline and facility integrity and maintenance programs. Opening Introduction

Descriptions: Black swan and perfect storm often refer to exceptional high-impact hazardous events. They are often associated with lack of knowledge in form of so-called unknowable unknowns. The presentation shows how these extreme events and unknowable unknowns should be treated in asset risk management and decision making.

Presentation 1:“Black Swans & Perfect Storms: Myth, apology, or opportunity?” 

Descriptions: Oil and gas transmission pipelines are routinely inspected through in-line inspection (ILI) technologies and the reported features are remediated through dig programs. Due to the limitations of current ILI technology, reports of ILI tools contain large uncertainties, particularly in feature detection and sizing. To ensure safe pipeline operation, a large deterministic safety factor is typically employed for fitness-for-service assessment of the reported features, which results in an inefficient dig program.
This talk presents a recursive optimization approach for excavation program using risk-informed decision-making approach. The best locations to prioritize for remediation are based not only on the number of critical features but also on the value of information gained from the field validation of the ILI report. The trade-off in feature severity and density for dig prioritization is discussed.

Descriptions: A campaign with the slogan “Maintain Curiosity” was recently initiated at Gibson Energy to drive a culture change towards a risk-based process safety culture and to increase process safety management competency and performance among front-line personnel. The slogan emphasizes the importance of sustaining curiosity towards process safety while conveying that front-line employees baseline knowledge, skills and abilities is essential for the campaign’s success. The campaign involves a three-phased rollout which will include process safety fundamentals, identifying process safety hazards and risks and the effective management of these risks.

Presentation  3: “Process Safety at Gibson Energy - Maintaining Curiosity”

Large energy pipeline networks are complex engineering systems which traverse thousands of miles of terrain and often consist of pipe segments of different designs, vintages, and operating conditions. Quantitative risk assessment of such large pipeline networks thus imposes great challenges to pipeline operators in terms of data integration, data quality control, algorithm development, computational efficiency, and risk validation.
This presentation introduces TC Energy’s ongoing effort to modernize its quantitative pipeline risk assessment process from relying on an obsolete PC-based application to a cloud-based solution from a major web service provider. The modernization enables automation of data integration and data quality reporting leveraging the platform’s data ETL (extract, transform, load) functionalities, allows more efficient development, test, and validation of risk analysis algorithm via the adoption of Python-based citizen development, and simplifies risk results.

Presentation 4: “Risk Assessment of Large Energy Pipeline Network"

Oil and gas pipelines in North America play a crucial role in the energy infrastructure, but they are subject to various risks. The first half of the presentation is intended to provide a high-level overview of what is defined as “Risk” in the oil and gas industries and look at industry trends.

The second half of the presentation will showcase corrosion-related examples of how Risk concepts are being used now and how it is moving forward.
1.	An overview of the corrosion probabilistic risk assessment as outlined in Annex O of CSA Z662-23 will be provided. 
2.	The outcomes of a global simulation-based sensitivity analysis conducted by Dynamic Risk for corrosion limit states in Annex O of CSA Z662-23 will be presented. 
3.	A review of forthcoming developments in corrosion risk assessment will be presented, comprising machine learning and optimization techniques.
