Civic Life Programs at NYCL

Civic Life programs help participants learn about a timely issue from a variety of sources and perspectives, with special care to make conversations welcoming for equity-seeking groups. Programs have both an expert panel and group discussion.

Panel speakers include:Albert KoehlAn environmental lawyer, coordinator of<a href="https://www.communitybikewaysto.ca/" title="https://www.communitybikewaysto.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Community Bikeways</a>, and author of <a href="https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM4506221&amp;R=4506221" title="https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM4506221&amp;R=4506221" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Wheeling Through Toronto: A History of the Bicycle and its Riders.</a>Michael LongfieldThe executive director of <a href="https://www.cycleto.ca/" title="https://www.cycleto.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Cycle Toronto</a>, a member-supported charity dedicated to making Toronto a healthier, safer, and more vibrant cycling city for all. He is a passionate advocate for building inclusive cycling communities and making riding a bike a convenient transportation option.Jess SpiekerA volunteer with <a href="https://www.ffsafestreets.ca/" title="https://www.ffsafestreets.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Friends and Families for Safe Streets </a>(FFSS) advocating to prevent death and injury on Toronto’s streets. After being struck and nearly killed by a reckless driver in 2015, Jess now works to see a Toronto where that never happens to anyone else.Alison StewartThe <a href="https://bycs.org/alison-stewart/" title="https://bycs.org/alison-stewart/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Bicycle Mayor of Toronto</a> and the founding member of <a href="https://femmesandfriends.ca/" title="https://femmesandfriends.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Femmes &amp; Friends</a>, a collective of women who seek to spread the joy of biking by creating inclusive and supportive spaces for women without the fear of judgment or competition. Alison began her journey as a cycling advocate in 2013 out of frustration with dangerous cycling conditions and the desire to be a positive agent of change.
