Kick off your Asian Heritage Month 2026 with an incredible showcase on Indian classical music and dance with TARANG, an evening of Hindustani music and Kathak, all performed live at Calgary's home for music and art.The evening will begin with a traditional presentation of raga music featuring sarangi maestro, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzVuSU0mcPk" title="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzVuSU0mcPk" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Pankaj Mishra</a>, accompanied by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g8aomN9yZ4" title="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g8aomN9yZ4" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Vineet Vyas</a>, a disciple of the tabla legend, Pt. Kishan Maharaj. Following a brief intermission, the musicians will welcome vocalist Kavita Mishra to join them on stage as they accompany <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn49cgkrTGI" title="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn49cgkrTGI" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Bageshree Vaze</a>, trained under the legend Pt. Artist BiographiesPankaj Mishra:Pankaj Mishra comes from a long lineage of sarangi virtuosos, and at a very young age created a style of his own. He regularly tours the world and has recorded albums with numerous world-renowned vocalists. He was awarded the first position in sarangi playing from the State Music Academy of West Bengal. Mishra’s unique style is admired and sought after by a wide range of professionals from venerable Indian masters to luminary world musicians.Pankaj Mishra comes from a long line of musicians. He is the great-grandson of Sarangi virtuoso late Pandit Saraju Prasad Mishra, grandson of late Pandit Mahadeo Prasad Mishra, and son of Shri Satya Narayan Mishra. He began learning music at an early age, taking his taalim from Pandit Mahesh Prasad Mishra.His sensitive style of playing and interpretation is admired and sought after by a wide range of musicians. He has performed solos, accompanied senior vocalists like Late Vidushi Girija Devi and tabla maestros like Pandit Kumar Bose.Vineet Vyas:Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Vineet Vyas comes from a family of traditional musicians from India: his grandfather Pt. Brahmanand Vyas, was a renowned vocalist and initiated him into Hindustani classical music at the age of five.He began studying with Pandit Kishan Maharaj in 1987 in the holy city of Varanasi, in the traditional style of guru-shishya parampara. After intense training and sadhana (dedication) to his guru, Vineet firmly established himself as an accomplished tabla artist.Vineet has been an active performer in the Canadian music scene since the World Exposition 1986, in Vancouver, BC. Audiences are enthralled as they witness and feel the depth of his musicality, spontaneity, and creativity.He has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals throughout India and across North America with some of India’s eminent classical artists such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Ustad Aashish Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez and Dr. L Subramaniam.His solo CD, Taalworks, was a breakthrough album featuring tabla at the forefront and was released in India through Times Music. In 2010, his solo album The King of Dhamaar – a Tribute to Pandit Kishan Maharaj, received an East Coast Music Award nomination for Best World Recording.Vineet was featured in the Bravo! Channel’s documentary ‘Fingers of Fire’. Vineet holds an MFA in World Percussion from the California Institute of the Arts. In 2015 and 2019 Vineet was a finalist for the Muriel Sherrin Award – International Achievement Finalist presented by the Toronto Arts Foundation.Bagashree Vaze:Bageshree Vaze is an Indo-Canadian dance artist and musician. Raised in St. John’s, NL, Bageshree initially trained in Bharatha Natyam, and studied vocal music with her father, Damodar Vaze. She later trained in Kathak dance with Jai Kishan Maharaj in New Delhi, and studied vocal music with the renowned Veena Sahasrabuddhe. Bageshree has five CDs to her credit, including Tarana, an album of music for Indian dance, which was released in India by Times Music under the name Khanak. Bageshree holds a Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Journalism from Carleton University and an M.A. in Dance from York University. In 2019 her production ‘A Hidden Princess’ was nominated for 3 Dora Mavor Moore Awards including Outstanding Performance by an Individual, Outstanding Sound Composition and Outstanding Production. Bageshree is the 2022 Inaugural Dance Collection Danse Artist Researcher-in-Residence, and in May 2022 she choreographed the work ‘Anthem’ for the School of Toronto Dance Theatre. In 2022 Bageshree won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Original Composition in the Dance Division for her production ‘Sadhana/Tarana.’ In 2023 her video series ‘Tarana,’ a co-production with the Aga Khan Museum, was released online featuring her choreography and performance of original music for Kathak dance.
