TEDxQueensUSalon | WIRED

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our events are called TEDxQueensU and TEDxQueensUSalon, where x=independently organized TED event. At our Salon events, TED Talk videos and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED team provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

TEDxQueensU

TEDx Salon events are unique, intimate gatherings for watching TED talks, listening to local speakers, and engaging in discussions on issues of interest to the local community. This year, TEDxQueensUSalon has partnered with Queen's <A HREF="http://www.queensu.ca/sgs/home" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">School of Graduate Studies</A> (SGS) to highlight graduate student research and interests starting with our first event of the year on Wearable Technology. 
TEDxQueensUSalon: WIRED and SGS will welcome Atul Jaiswal, Debra Mackinnon, and Steven Richardson to each discuss novel applications and insights of wearable technology. Talks will be followed by the presentation of case-example scenarios related to wearable technology, during which time attendees are invited to discuss the advantages, considerations, and potential alternative applications. 
Light refreshments will be provided. Doors open for networking at 4:45pm followed by formal programming beginning at 5:00pm.

<A HREF="https://twitter.com/atuljais111?lang=en" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Atul Jaiswal </A>| Atul is a doctoral candidate at the School of Rehabilitation Therapy, <A HREF="http://queensu.ca/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Queen’s University</A>. He is an occupational therapist, trained in India, where he previously worked for five years as a disability rehabilitation professional. He received a gold medal during his Master’s degree in Disabilities Studies and was instrumental in initiating a successful <A HREF="http://dcidj.org/article/view/529" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">advocacy campaign </A>for people with disabilities (<A HREF="http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report-ngo-for-the-disabled-urges-central-railway-to-have-a-heart-sanction-vangani-fob-proposal-1822492" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">resulting in sanction of INR 15 million</A>) during his fellowship. He is a recipient of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship and currently pursuing his doctoral research on deafblindness in India. His current work also focuses on understanding the use of assistive technology for people with deafblindness.
<A HREF="https://www.linkedin.com/in/debra-mackinnon/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Debra Mackinnon </A>|  Debra is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Sociology, <A HREF="http://queensu.ca/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Queen’s University</A>. Broadly, her research interests include: surveillance studies, policing, urban studies, science and technology, policy mobility, and critical geographies and political economy. Her doctoral research Converging Networks: Following data driven practices across Canadian Business Improvement Areas, focuses on urban governance and managerialism. This SSRHC funded project investigates the adoption, mobility and legitimization of public-private surveillance networks and the creation of data collection practices in Canadian cities. Debra was also a principal investigator of the report <A HREF="http://www.sscqueens.org/publications/left-to-their-own-devices" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Left to their own Devices? Privacy Implications of Wearables in Canadian Workplaces</A>, which was <A HREF="https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/opc-actions-and-decisions/research/funding-for-privacy-research-and-knowledge-translation/completed-contributions-program-projects/2016-2017/p_201617_10/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">published</A> by the Canadian Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
<A HREF="https://www.linkedin.com/in/steven-richardson-44656726/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Steven Richardson</A> | Steven is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Sociology, Queen’s University. His doctoral research focuses on the development and adoption of emerging technologies such as wearables -- particularly, the push and pull of users' own contributions to the design and development of these technologies. His thesis examines how enterprise and industrial use cases shape the trajectory of wearable technologies for workplace applications. Steven was also a principal investigator of the report <A HREF="http://www.sscqueens.org/publications/left-to-their-own-devices" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Left to their own Devices?" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Left to their own Devices? Privacy Implications of Wearables in Canadian Workplaces,</A> which was <A HREF="https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/opc-actions-and-decisions/research/funding-for-privacy-research-and-knowledge-translation/completed-contributions-program-projects/2016-2017/p_201617_10/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">published </A>by the Canadian Office of the Privacy Commissioner. This research also produced the most current and up-to-date database of wearable devices available in Canada – which he is currently working to combine with <A HREF="http://vandrico.com/wearables/wearable-technology-database" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">other datasets</A>, in <A HREF="http://vandrico.com/wearables/contributors" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">partnership with other Canadian companies</A>.
