The Authenticity Advantage
The Authenticity Advantage: Winning Votes, Increasing Trust and Leading Canadians
Political parties demand communications discipline from their candidates and MPs, but many elected representatives resent their own lack of control over what they can or cannot say to their constituents on the campaign trail and while in office. Scripted performances by parliamentarians have contributed to a decline in trust in our democratic institutions, and the demand for authentic politicians – those who appear genuine, ordinary, relatable, and consistent in their values – is on the rise among voters. This presentation will give an initial overview of a project that is studying authenticity in Canadian politics, including the use of authentic “talk” by party leaders in the 2025 election.
