An immersive forest walk and talk on what forests do for the world, and how trees, humans, and other species are all interconnected.
The Invitation
Living Ways Foundation is pleased to invite you to attend a Forest Walk and Talk through our forest ecosystems. The first half of this session will see retired Forestry Specialist, Ian Mackenzie, take you on a walk through the Living Ways forest. During this walk we will use living examples to talk about forest symbiosis, the different types of forests and their roles and ecosystem implications, how a forest and trees grow, the roles of different species within, human interaction with the forest, the good and the bad, and how we can manage our forests for the future.
Finishing the forest walk on the property's highest peak to watch the sunset, the session will move to the Living Ways barn where Ian will talk more about what we've seen outside and go deeper into forest ecology, answering more of your questions with an informal Q&A whilst you enjoy a hot beverage and light snacks.
Purpose - Ian's Objective
This will be a wide ranging conversation, intended to provide or refresh a 'basics' level of understanding of the many ways in which forests are interconnected - broadly to the rest of the world, and internally among its inhabitants. Participants will come away with a solid refresher of the many ways in which forests enrich the rest of the world and how forests 'work'.
What's Planned
The field walk will encompass some of the vast diversity of tree and forest types making up Living Ways. We'll look at just a few of the many interesting forest aspects of the property and point out aspects of forest management, symbiosis and other interconnectedness available right here.
Once comfortably seated, we will head up to a 30,000 foot view of "what forests do for the world" in order to touch on a broad range of aspects and bring everyone to a basic level of understanding - this will be a quick overview - and then the focus will deep-dive into how forests evolve, how they 'work', what perils face forests, and ways in which humans can use this understanding to be responsible stewards of forests. Along the way we will refer back to what we saw on our initial walk-about, and we will engage with questions and topics of interest to participants.
Space is limited! Please register your spot ahead of the event.
Arrive early. Forest walk begins promptly at 5:30 PM.
