A new eye-opening documentary film brings light to a hidden crisis and compels audiences to take action to end illiteracy once and for all.

The documentary highlights the stories of David Chalk and John Corcoran, two men who didn’t learn how to read and write until they were adults. Following their stories gives a glimpse into the hard truth of how illiteracy and sub-literacy impede a person’s ability to truly thrive. Mr. Chalk will be joining us virtually after the screening to share his personal reflection about his literacy journey.B﻿ring a non-perishable food item, as we are collecting for the Partners in Mission Food Bank. Bringing the power of community together.Filled with powerful emotion, a deep sense of urgency, and an overarching spirit of hope, The Truth About Reading brings light to a hidden crisis and compels audiences to take action to end illiteracy once and for all.

Agenda

Several community agencies will have information tables set-up prior to the start of the film. Visit with agencies and get learn more their literacy services and resources. We welcome Kingston, Frontenac Public Library, Learning Disability Association of Kingston (LDAK), Kingston Language and Literacy Skills, and Brenda Reed from the Education Library at Queens Faculty of Education and more to the community carousel.

This documentary includes challenging topics and subject matter and it is meant for an adult audience.

Welcome & Film Screening

David Chalk has had a successful career developing and promoting technologies. He is someone who many believed had everything - but he didn't. In 2021, at the age of 62, David learned to read and write. David will share his riveting story and the connection between reading and comprehension literacy and why it has a direct impact on the ability to reach our true potential.
