Join us for the 2022 Elevate Impact Event!  An evening to dive into the issue of houselessness in our city and province.

The Creative Hive

Join us for Elevate: Houselessness, this Impact Event is an evening to learn, to deepen our understanding, and to explore the intersectionality of houselessness and many other prevalent issues. Hear from our speakers about their experiences, their work, their stories, and how we can be change-makers in our city and province in reducing the homeless population.At Elevate we strive to create a safe and inclusive community where EVERYONE is welcome, questions and open dialogue are encouraged, connections are made, and respect for one another is always a priority. Elevate: Houselessness is open to everyone and is an all ages event. All proceeds from the event are being donated to the <a href="https://bissellcentre.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Bissell Centre</a> and <a href="https://www.waterwarriorsyeg.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Water Warriors YEG</a>. Gary St. Amand is the Chief Executive Officer of Bissell Centre, a 112-year-old, multi-service, social impact organization that seeks to eliminate poverty in its community.

Prior to his role as CEO, Gary was the Chief Programs Officer and has been with the organization for over nine years. During his tenure, he has led and given oversight to the development of numerous initiatives including: an award-winning eviction prevention program; a permanent supportive housing program for people with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder – a first of its kind in Canada; and a financial empowerment program that has seen millions of dollars find their way into the pockets of Albertans experiencing poverty and homelessness.

During the first two years of the pandemic, Bissell Centre was a lead partner in the collaborative development of two large emergency shelters, first at Edmonton’s Expo Centre, and subsequently, at the Edmonton Convention Centre. For each of these projects, the organization nearly doubled in size twice, both times relocating significant portions of its operations to support those initiatives and ensure that access to critical services was made available to thousands of people at a time when most community supports had closed or greatly reduced.

Gary was a member the Prosperity Advisory Committee for the Business Council of Alberta’s Define the Decade initiative and currently serves as a Board Member for the Edmonton Community Legal Centre. Previously he was a member of the City of Edmonton’s EndPovertyEdmonton Implementation Taskforce, and a member of the advisory team for Recover: Edmonton’s Urban Wellness Strategy.

<h2>Dr. Jaspreet K. Khangura</h2>

Dr. Jaspreet Khangura is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Research Scientist in the University of Alberta’s
 Department of Emergency Medicine. She practices emergency medicine at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and
 Northeast Community Health Centre. Jaspreet currently co-leads these two sites COVID-19 research efforts, as part
 of the Canadian COVID-19 ED Rapid Response Network (CCEDRRN). CCEDRRN is a national research collaboration
 for Emergency Department patients presenting with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.
Jaspreet is a founding member of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physician’s Health Equity
 Committee.  She also serves as a member of Canada’s National Expert Committee on Countering
 Radicalization to Violence and previously served on the board the Canadian Association of Rhodes Scholars.
After receiving her MD from the University of British Columbia, Jaspreet studied at the University of Oxford, as a
 Rhodes Scholar, where she completed an MSc in Evidence-Based Health Care (EBHC) and an MSc in Neuroscience.
 As a Jeanne Sauvé Fellow she developed expertise is in social determinants of health and health policy.

With her smile and her great big heart, Rebecca hits the street with the rest of her wagon family to bring some comfort to those living rough on the streets of Edmonton.

Rebecca is also a proud descendant of the Kahkewistahaw Cree First Nation, Treaty 4. She is a fire keeper, and a drum keeper as well as a former singer for Chubby Cree.

Having lost her niece to a drug poisoning, she is very passionate about Harm Reduction. Rebecca teaches Naloxone Administration in her spare time.

Rebecca is trained in Studio III Low Arousal Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, a certificated approach that is Human-Rights based, as well as Trauma-Informed Care. Rebecca is also a trained Bio-hazard Remediation Technician which means she has training in blood-borne pathogens and cross contamination.

One bottle of water may not change the world, but it may make all the difference to that one person's day.
