BookNet Canada is a non-profit organization that develops technology, standards, and education to serve the Canadian book industry. Founded in 2002 to address systemic challenges in the industry, BookNet Canada supports publishing companies, booksellers, wholesalers, distributors, sales agents, industry associations, literary agents, media, and libraries across the country.BookNet Canada acknowledges that its operations are remote and our colleagues contribute their work from the traditional territories of theMississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, theHaudenosaunee, the Wyandot, the Mi’kmaq, the Ojibwa of Fort William First Nation, the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations (which includes the Ojibwa, the Odawa, and the Potawatomie), and the Métis, the original nations and peoples of the lands we now call Beeton, Brampton, Guelph, Halifax, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Vaughan, and Windsor. We endorse theCalls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canadaand support an ongoing shift from gatekeeping to spacemaking in the book industry.

This course introduces Thema, the international, multi-lingual subject category scheme, its origin and benefits, and demonstrates how it should be used across the global book supply chain.Attendees will learn the principles behind Thema and its use, and how to go about adopting it within their organization. The course includes a practical hands-on session categorizing real-world books and a discussion of best practices to optimize in-store and online discovery.This comprehensive course is suitable for those with no prior knowledge of Thema. It is aimed at staff with an interest in practical book subject classification, particularly in editorial, IT, marketing, or within online or physical retail.You must be in Canada and have a Canadian mailing address to attend.Chris Saynor is responsible for EDItEUR&#x27;s book publishing standards including ONIX, Thema and EDItX. He joined the organization in late 2016. For the previous eight years, he worked for GiantChair Inc. in Paris as a metadata specialist and project manager, and has been responsible for implementation of the Onixsuite application in many publishing organizations. He is widely known for his work with French industry liaison body CLIL and with BISG committees.
