What’s a third space?

Third spaces are places to go outside of home (first place) and work/school (second place) to be in community and connect with others. This can be a coffee shop,  park, pub, community space, etc. The idea of the 'third place' was coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in the 1980s.

Why do we need more third spaces?

Accepted Answer

Having a strong sense of community makes us happier and healthier.  While we have many public spaces in Vancouver, they often aren't conducive to meaningful connection. We need more third spaces that intentionally foster connection and build community.

Who can attend?

Do you want to find more community? Are you open to meeting new people across ages, backgrounds and lived experiences, and hearing new perspectives and ideas?  Join us! Many participants are from Fairview/Mount Pleasant, where gatherings are based, but folks join us from across Vancouver.

What will we talk about at a Third Space Night?

The talks/discussions at each gathering will focus on a theme related to building better communities- think: sustainability at the community level, how to navigate meeting your neighbours, or how to be more present in a digital world.

Who runs Third Space Nights?

Third Space Nights are a grassroots community initiative and are totally volunteer-run.  We operate on a not-for-profit basis. If you're interested in getting involved or speaking at an event, email us at thirdspacevancouver@gmail.com.

What's the purpose of Third Space Nights?

We aim to build community within gatherings by creating an inclusive, connective space to return to monthly. We also share ideas for community-building that you can take beyond gatherings into your neighbourhoods, groups and other third spaces.
