What’s a third space?

Third spaces are places to go outside of home and work/school to be in community and connect with others. This can be a coffee shop,  park, pub, community centre, etc. The idea of the 'third place' was coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in the 1980s.

Why do we need more third spaces?

Having a strong sense of community makes us happier and healthier- but third spaces in Vancouver don’t always make it easy to form meaningful connections. Third Space Nights offer a free, accessible and inclusive way to build community.

Can I come with a friend or family member?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! You will be encouraged to meet new people during the event, but are welcome to come with friends or family members. Due to the limited capacity of the room, please ensure each person registers in advance.

What will we talk about at a Third Space Night?

Accepted Answer

The talks/discussions at each gathering will focus on a theme related to building better communities- think: sustainability at the community level, how to navigate meeting your neighbours (should I really just knock on their door?) or how to be more present in a digital world.

What happens when I get there?

Knowing it can be intimidating to walk into a new space and approach people, Third Space Nights are lightly structured and facilitated. There’s structure there if it’s helpful, such as suggested discussion topics and prompts, but you’re always welcome to ignore it if you're in a good conversation.

Who runs Third Space Nights?
