What’s a third space?

Third spaces are places to go outside of home and work/school to be in community and connect with others. This can be a coffee shop,  park, pub, community centre, etc. The idea of the 'third place' was coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in the 1980s.

Why do we need more third spaces?

Having a strong sense of community makes us happier and healthier.  While we have many public spaces in Vancouver, they often aren't conducive to meaningful connections. We need more third spaces that intentionally foster connection and build community.

Can I bring someone with me?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! You will be encouraged to meet new people during the event, but are welcome to come with friends or family members. Due to the limited capacity of the room, please ensure each person registers in advance.

What will we talk about at a Third Space Night?

The talks/discussions at each gathering will focus on a theme related to building better communities- think: sustainability at the community level, how to navigate meeting your neighbours (should I really just knock on their door?) or how to be more present in a digital world.

What happens when I get there?

Knowing it can be intimidating to walk into a space of new  people, Third Space Nights are lightly facilitated to guide you through the evening. There’s structure if it’s helpful, such as discussion prompts and activities, but you’re always welcome to ignore it if you're in a good conversation.

Do you want to find more community? Are you open to meeting new people across ages, backgrounds and lived experiences and hearing new perspectives and ideas?  Join us! Many attendees are from Fairview/Mt Pleasant, where our gatherings are based, but we've had attendees from across Vancouver.

Who runs Third Space Nights?

Third Space Nights are community-led and volunteer-run. Started by Rebecca Klaassen, a Fairview resident passionate about building more community in Vancouver. If you're interested in getting involved or speaking at an event, email us at thirdspacevancouver@gmail.com.

What's the goal of Third Space Nights?

We aim to build community within gatherings by creating an inclusive, welcoming space conducive to connection that you can return to monthly. We also share ideas for community-building that you can take beyond gatherings into your neighbourhoods, groups and third spaces.
