It's 3MT Time!

Boost skills - Gain visibility - Expand your network

The Three-Minute Thesis competition, or 3MT, challenges graduate students to share their thesis research within three minutes. Each faculty holds a Faculty Heat, and the winner moves on to the SFU 3MT Final. The SFU winner represents SFU at the Western Regional Competition - and possibly National!

A panel of faculty judges votes for the best presentation, with the People's Choice Award voted by the audience.

Cash prizes!

First Place: $500

Runner-Up: $200

People's Choice: $200

  1. Download the 2026 template slide and competition rules here.
  2. Register by Monday, March 2, 4:00 pm.
  3. Submit your slide by Monday, March 9, 4:00 pm to scirec@sfu.ca.

You can sign up to test-run your presentation and get feedback, in a friendly Practice 3MT session. SFU also offers 3MT Prep training.

You will receive an e-mail with all competition details once you register.
