This session will assist individuals in the use of Trauma & Violence Informed Care (TVIC) principles to enhance their everyday practice.

Strength-based, empowerment perspectives of care must start with anti-oppressive understanding and move into practical skill-based action to combat stigma and provide compassion. This webinar will be used to assist individuals in the use of Trauma &amp; Violence Informed Care (TVIC) principles to enhance their everyday practice. The webinar will involve three components: the link between structural violence, stigma and trauma; the understanding of how these three components shape the life experience of individuals living with mental health and addictions; the use of practical skills to reduce stigma and create inclusive spaces within our scope of practice. Using references from the original Trauma &amp; Violence Informed Care certification program, developed by the Public Health Association of Canada and the Centre for Sexuality, this webinar will introduce structural violence (or violations existing in the larger social structure) to inform the participants on the origins of stigma, and help them grow their understanding of combating stigma with their peers. Bio:Kathleen’s passion is educating workers and volunteers in human services to enhance their empathic, empowerment, and advocacy skills. Kathleen is an award-winning educator and curriculum developer in Community Services post-secondary programs, as well as an active member of the social service community in Hamilton. As the owner of Wisemind Coaching Services, Kathleen works to enhance the knowledge of workers and volunteers in the social service sector. Kathleen is trained as a Trauma and Violence Informed Care instructor by the Public Health Association of Canada, and also delivers Positive Space Training, mental health seminars and skill-based presentations to workers and volunteers. Using extensive knowledge of social service perspectives and practical skill sets, Kathleen can develop group and individual training as needed. Kathleen worked as a Peer Support Worker in a local Consumer Survivor Initiative and is currently an active member of the Hamilton Drug Strategy (Harm Reduction Pillar).
