Addressing canopy cover and achieving tree equity in Canadian municipalities.

&quot;Urban forests, defined as all natural and planted trees in or near an urban area, are increasingly recognized as important components of more liveable, healthy, and resilient cities. They sequester and store carbon, keep cities cool, (mitigating urban heat islands), serve as habitats for many species, and shield us from extreme weather like floods and landslides. Just as importantly, they support our mental and physical well-being. And yet evidence suggests that not everybody gets to enjoy the benefits of the urban forest to the same degree. People living in racialized and marginalized neighbourhoods have highly inequitable access to urban trees and forests compared to those in affluent neighborhoods.&quot; (<a href="https://naturecanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Nature-Canada-Report-Tree-Equity.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nature Canada, 2022</a>) During this webinar, you will learn about barriers to increasing canopy cover, potential and innovative solutions, resources and best practices to help cities expand their canopy cover and achieve tree equity. He helps facilitate organizations’ and cities’ involvement in the federal government’s 2 Billion Tree Program, and coordinates four reforestation coalitions in BC, Alberta, the Prairies, and Ontario. Outside of Nature Canada, he has also organized and led tree-planting campaigns in underrepresented neighbourhoods in the City of Toronto. In his free time, Rakshan enjoys hiking, kayaking and wildlife photography.Rob MillerCalgary Climate HubRob Miller is a retired systems engineer who is now focusing on climate activism and urban forestation. As a Calgary Climate Hub Volunteer, he’s organized community events such as a Bio-Blitz at Dale Hodges Park and a community tree planting event with Parks Calgary in Bowmont Park. He’s also published several articles on the importance and benefits of forests. His interest in reforesting Dale Hodges Park led him to learning about the Miyawaki forest method, collaborating with Parks Calgary on their Miyawaki forest pilot project, and helping the Climate Hub to establish the Forests For Calgary initiative.
