Learn how to intentionally utilize lighting in videos in this beginner-friendly workshop!

This hands-on lighting workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate filmmakers and photographers looking to deepen their understanding of light as a storytelling tool. Participants will explore the fundamentals of lighting, including shaping the quality of light, motivating sources, and using light to support narrative.

Through practical exercises, attendees will work with professional lighting equipment to create a range of visually distinct scenes, experimenting across different genres, moods, and styles.

Workshops are recommended for people ages 12 and over. Children under 12 years old are welcome with parent/guardian supervision. Please get a ticket for each person (incl. all children).

The workshop is admission by donation! Suggested $20 - $30 to support facilitator fees and supplies.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

Kyle Wilson is an independent filmmaker based in Calgary. A skilled cinematographer, he crafts compelling images while also telling stories through light, shaping narrative and emotion with refined filmmaking techniques. He is also an accomplished director of numerous short films that highlight the beauty found in everyday life and celebrate individuals and communities through a humanist lens. His work includes collaborations with Alcove, Ship Hop, and Cold Garden.

Alcove Centre for the Arts (alcoveartscentre.ca) is a non-profit organization based in Calgary, AB which aims to make art more accessible and promote a vibrant local arts industry. We curate and cultivate community art spaces for Calgarians to engage in art and creativity while building a platform for emerging local artists.

Alcove is a Recreational Art Space open to the public providing free art supplies and instruments to stimulate creativity. The space also acts as a gathering place for workshops, community events, and social meetups. Come visit and get creative!
