This fall, Virtual Learning for Life returns! Join us online for weekly lectures.

About this Event

This fall, Virtual Learning for Life returns! The program is free for all UM alumni and friends thanks to the generous sponsorship of our affinity partner, iA Financial.

Join us online for weekly lectures from UM experts on a variety of topics. We’ll explore health, infectious disease, anthropology and more. Explore new ideas, hear about innovative research happening right here in Manitoba, and engage in online discussion with your peers.

Lectures will be presented live from 1– 2 PM CT each Wednesday. Spring 2020 recordings are now available on the UM YouTube channel.

OCT. 14 - Topic: Challenge are made for the winner: Exploring positive youth development through sport. Presenter: Dr. Leisha Strachan, Professor, Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, University of Manitoba.

OCT. 21 - Topic: The Dilemma of Dominic Ongwen: A former child soldier on trial at the International Criminal Court. Presenter: Dr. Kjell Anderson, Assistant Professor; Director, Master of Human Rights Program, University of Manitoba.

OCT. 28 - Topic: How to mend a broken heart. Presenter: Dr. Lorrie Kirshenbaum, Director of Research Development Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, Canada Research Chair in Molecular Cardiology Professor Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology & Therapeutics Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre.

NOV. 4 - Topic: Social isolation and loneliness: Why are they a public health risk? What are possible solutions? Presenter: Dr. Verena Menec, Professor, Department of Community Health Sciences, Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba.

NOV. 18 - Topic: Research on preventing infectious diseases: Studies from HIV and COVID-19. Presenter: Dr. Keith Fowke, Professor, Departments of Medical Microbiology and Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba.

DEC. 2 - Topic: Cosmos and Canvas: Using art to reveal science in astronomy public outreach images. Presenter: Dr. Jayanne English, Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Manitoba.

DEC. 9 - Topic: Eating to Live Longer and Better. Presenters: Dr. Carla Taylor, Professor, Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, Dr. Peter Zahradka, Professor, Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences.
