A WALK TOWARDS TRUTH is a settler&#x27;s reflective fundraising walk for Indigenous survivors, families and communities.On Sunday, October 17th we will walk for the children who, by no choice of their own, were forced into residential schools and stripped of everything they once knew. The WALK TOWARDS TRUTH is symbolic of the journey the children took when escaping the residential school to return to their families. Sadly, many did not make it. Those that did survive carry with them the trauma and sorrow of their loss from families, languages, songs, teachings and ceremonies. These losses are still felt today. Together on this walk we mourn this loss and come together to fundraise for the community. We ask participants to reflect on and pray for the children who were not given the chance to live full lives, many who died at the schools. The gathering begins at 9am at the Brantford Civic Centre. The opening will include reflections from a residential school Survivor. At 9:15, we will begin the 21 km journey on foot to the Woodland Cultural Centre (the former Mohawk Institute Residential School) and on towards Six Nations, the home of many of the children. The walk ends at Chiefwood Park where closing reflections and sharing will take place. This humble walk is intended for personal reflection. All Funds raised will go to Woodland Cultural Centre for traditional language education and resource development. Language is deeply connected to culture and identity. This program aims to support Woodland Cultural Centre&#x27;s effort to restore what was taken from the children and their community. REGISTER EARLY as we are limiting walkers to 25 people respecting the COVID guidelines. We ask all walkers to bring masks and wear them when the 2 meter distance cannot be maintained. The committee for this event is comprised of settlers who are actively working to action the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, and is guided by an Indigenous residential school Survivor.
