Event description

Description

Calgary Cinematheque invites you to a screening of Walkabout.

At 7:00PM, as the last attendees take their seats, the main event will begin! Calgary Cinematheque is pleased to present Walkabout (1971), directed by Nicolas Roeg.

For many years now, one legendary film has appeared on every list of fine movies that are missing from distribution and home video. That film is Nicolas Roeg’s Walkabout, the 1971 drama about a fourteen-year-old girl and her little brother, who are lost in the Australian outback and are saved by a young Aborigine who is, indeed, walking about as his rite of passage into manhood. No one who saw Walkabout has ever forgotten it, and now it has been restored with some additional scenes in a new director’s cut on the Criterion edition.

Roeg was a cinematographer before he was a director, and this is one of the best-photographed films ever. It’s also a meditation about living on earth, which finds beauty in the way mankind’s intelligence can adapt to harsh conditions while civilization just tries to wall them off or pave them over. Walkabout is one of the great films. – Roger Ebert for Criterion, READ MORE HERE

Awards
1971 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL - NOMINATION (Palme d'Or | Nicolas Roeg)

Walkabout is the second title in our FOCUS: LANDSCAPES series.

--------------------------------------

More than a mere setting, a landscape and the representation of it undergoes differing treatments in cinema. At the intersection of topography and narrative, there are films that evoke, and exercise a landscape’s capacity as a kinetic and tactile character.

For our 2017/2018 FOCUS Series we have chosen four films that propose landscape as a primary and reflexive organ in their anatomy. As emblematic examples we are pleased to include RED DESERT (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1964), WALKABOUT (Nicolas Roeg, 1971), BADLANDS (Terence Malick, 1973), and I AM CUBA (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1964) in a collection bringing about a renewed perspective on cinematic space, its forms, and its ability to combine our sense of place with our sense of story.

We look forward to seeing you there! With more news about our 10th Anniversary Season being released every week, stay in touch via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and our Member Newsletter. We'd love to hear from you.
