Walking Toronto's Winter PATH

The objective of Lost River Walks is to encourage understanding of the city as a part of nature rather than apart from it, and to appreciate and cherish our  heritage. Lost River Walks aims to create an appreciation of the city’s  intimate connection to its water systems by tracing the courses of forgotten  streams, by learning about our natural and built heritage and by sharing this  information with others.

<h3><strong>The downtown PATH system of underground walkways protects us from the worst of the winter elements. It’s also loaded with proxies, or “stand-ins”, for the natural world – a world largely excluded from our public indoor spaces. This walk highlights cultural expressions of Nature and attitudes towards Place that we can see along the PATH.</strong></h3><h3><strong>Examining building materials, architectural devices and public art installations, we will explore unexpected corners of the PATH system to consider our complex relationship with our northern landscape and its Indigenous peoples. We will look hard for references to lost landscapes and waterways in a largely manufactured environment.</strong></h3><h3><strong>John Wilson and Ed Freeman will lead a walk of approximately two hours, mostly indoors with secure footing, but with many stairs. (The PATH is far from universally accessible.) Occasionally we will step outdoors onto streetscapes, but primarily we will walk through labyrinthine interior spaces. </strong></h3><h3><strong>Washrooms are available along the route.</strong></h3><h3>Meet at the temporary skating rink outside of Union Station – 65 Front St. West. The walk will end at the Sheraton Centre, 123 Queen St. West.</h3><h3><strong>Public transit to starting point via Line 1 subway to Union Station. End near Queen or Osgoode stations.</strong></h3>
