"Honouring the Children" Exhibition, Workshops, Community Art Project, and Gift Show at Sparrow Artspace (36 4 St NE, Calgary), Sept 1-30th!  Drop-in Thurs-Sat 11am-6pm to view the exhibition (free) or register for one of our many workshops!

In this workshop, you will learn about the traditional uses of the winter count and apply what you have learned to create a winter count representing your own history through symbolism. Winter Counts are a pictorial history of important events, traditionally painted on hide. Ages 8+ All abilities, supplies provided.*﻿ image: Niitawawattatopii (How We Travel From Winter to Winter) Winter Count&quot; for the years 1860-1885 in southern Alberta by Autumn Whiteway.T﻿aught by Autumn Whiteway (“Night Singing Woman”):Autumn is a Saulteaux(Ojibway)/Métis archaeologist, artist, traditional craftworker, educator and curator based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary, Alberta). She is a member of Berens River First Nation in Manitoba but grew up in Treaty 7 territory. She is a permit-holding archaeologist in Alberta and has an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Manitoba (2017), a B.Sc. in Archaeology, and a B.A. in Greek and Roman Studies (2011).Autumn Whiteway explores Indigenous themes from a contemporary perspective through painting, digital art, installation, and photography. Her painting and digital art is primarily focused on the heavily symbolic Woodland Style of art, while her photographic practice and installation is used as a form of activism to highlight Indigenous issues. Her curatorial work focuses on elevating the voices of Indigenous creatives through a series of Indigenous focused exhibitions.
