NEWTON MORAES DANCE THEATRENewton Moraes Dance Theatre (NMDT) is a company dedicated to the creation, performance and production of contemporary dance works to explore, maintain and develop the links between the arts of Canada and Latin America through the artistic vision and knowledge of its founder and artistic director: Newton Moraes. This includes especially the examination of Brazilian culture and the development of new forms of contemporary artistic expression.COMPANY’S GOALS:·To inspire and provide role models for young people.·To support dance artists who work with dance forms of the Latin American Diaspora in Canada and bring together dance professionals who preserve the history and traditions of Latin America and who foster an appreciation of its heritage.·To increase the visibility of the sector, and improve understanding by disseminating information.·To raise the level of critical discourse concerning the practice of dance forms of the Latin American Diaspora in Canada. This will include creating an awareness of the complexity of Latin American dance as a concept and encouraging closer critical engagement with the work of practitioners.·To provide an environment that supports artists in the creation of innovative forms of artistic expression.·To reach the widest possible audience and to be cultural ambassadors, nationally and internationally.HISTORY OF NEWTON MORAES DANCE THEATRE:The Newton Moraes Dance Theatre has mounted regular seasons in Toronto since its creation in 1997 and has toured extensively, to critical acclaim, in Canada and internationally. The company has performed in many of Toronto’s arts venues including the Du Maurier Theatre at Harbourfront Centre, the Betty Oliphant Theatre, Premiere Dance Theatre, Winchester Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and the Royal Ontario Museum and has presented works at local festivals including Series 808, fFida, and the Brazilian Ball. Ongoing school presentations and workshops have provided another avenue for NMDT to foster an appreciation of Brazilian culture and inspire young people through the arts.Nationally, NMDT has performed at Studio 303 in Montreal, Refinery Theatre in Vancouver, and Free Flow Dance in Saskatoon. Internationally, NMDT has toured extensively to Brazil, a number of cities in Germany, Bogota Colombia (Jorge Eliecer Theatre), Cuba and the U.S.The company has received support from the Toronto Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, The Laidlaw Foundation, the General Consulate of Brazil in Toronto, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in Ottawa, the Canadian Embassy in Berlin/Germany, the Canadian Consulate in São Paulo/Brazil, and the City of Porto Alegre/Brazil.
