Workshop: QLab Basics for Creators

The Pride in Art Society produces, presents and exhibits with a curatorial vision that favours challenging, thought-provoking work that pushes boundaries and initiates dialogue,  through theQueer Arts Festival (QAF), an annual, professional, artist-run, multidisciplinary festival at theRoundhouseand at theSUM Gallery, located in the Sun Wah building in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown.We work on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwəta? (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. To these host nations, we say thank you for your stewardship of this land since time immemorial. We recognize their sovereignty, as there are no treaties on these lands, and we are committed to building right relations based on respect and consent.

A workshop intro to QLab with SUM gallery artist-in-residence, ilvs strauss.

SUM Gallery

Come learn the basics of QLab with our SUM gallery artist-in-residence, ilvs strauss! QLab is a multimedia playback software package used in theatre and live entertainment around the world. In other words, it’s the program you use to play sound* in your show so that sound engineers don’t give you the side eye when you hand them your phone to play your set off iTunes. It is an essential tool for theatre makers, dancers, live performers and creators of any kind. It makes you infinitely more powerful as a creator and 80%** more pleasant to work with. In this workshop, you will learn: - how to import music tracks - how to program a QLab file to play your audio track replete with layers and fades - how to export a show-ready QLab bundle - other tricks too numerous to list! No previous experience required. Come if you already know a few things and want to sharpen your skills! You should bring these things: - your Mac laptop*** - at least one music file (any format, ideally on your laptop) - your questions, curiosity, and genius If you have QLab already, great! If not, we’ll go over how to download it - there’s a free version available that is quite robust. * It also does video, but that’s a different workshop. ** JKJK you are great to work with! *** QLab only works on Mac, sorry PC users!
