The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture is proud to partner with the Western Applied Research Corporation (WARC) in Scott to bring another year of Crop Diagnostic School to you. You can expect an in-depth training opportunity for agronomists, producers, industry and retail to improve your crop scouting skills and further your agronomic knowledge. <h3>How does Crop Diagnostic School Work?</h3>Crop Diagnostic School is a one-day event for participants. There will be two available dates, July 23 or 24 to choose from. Each day will be identical in material, so each participant only attends one day. Participants are divided into five groups and rotate through our five workshop stations during the day. A total of five CEUs are available to participants; four Integrated Pest Management and one Soil &amp; Water Management.Crop Diagnostic School will go rain or shine, so participants should come prepared for adverse weather.The 2025 Crop Diagnostic Handbooks will be available in print for every participant attending. The online version of the 2025 handbook will be posted after the school is finished. In addition, the team works each year to write, edit and update the Crop Diagnostic School Handbook. We have a team spread across 10 regional offices in the province that you can reach out to for unbiased agronomic information on crop management and for the latest updates on extension meetings in your area. Boot covers will be provided, and it is mandatory for ALL participants to wear them for the entire duration of the event. Boot covers will be collected for disposal after participants exit the field. A boot wash station and bleach solution will be available to disinfect footwear as you exit the field. No outside vehicles are permitted to enter the field at any time, there will be designated parking for attendees.

Stations

Want to know what diseases and issues the experts are focusing on this year? Join pathologists from the University of Saskatchewan and specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture to discuss biosecurity, disease, and management in pulses, cereals, and canola. 

Disease Station

The insect station will feature presentations on insect pests in field crops and beneficial insects. James Tansey, a specialist in insect pest management from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, and Dr. Tyler Wist, a field crop entomologist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, will lead the sessions. Participants will gain hands-on experience identifying insect pests and explore the role of beneficial insects in controlling insect pests in field crops.

Insects Station

This year's weeds station will feature presentations from Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture specialists, James Bush who is the manager of Saskatchewan's Crop Protection Lab, and Dr. Shaun Sharpe from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Participants will learn weed identification techniques and key herbicide resistance issues in Saskatchewan through a combination of specialist presentations and demonstration material.


Weeds Station

The 2025 herbicide station will incorporate two demonstrations. The first will examine herbicide injury symptomology from Group 2 products in a sprayer tank contamination scenario. The second will demonstrate herbicide injury symptomology from different groups of soil residual herbicides on different crops and weeds. Presenters will include Kim Stonehouse, Crops Extension Specialist and Cory Jacob, Acting Provincial Specialist, Weed Control from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

Herbicide Injury Station

The soils station will be separated into three demonstrations. The first part will discuss the establishment of forage grasses and legumes along with a demonstration showing root morphology of different crops and forages. The second demonstration will show how to diagnose seedling damage from improper urea rates in the seed row and improper seeding depth. The final demonstration will show differences in soil horizons and how soil formation affects horizons.
