Grub in The Hub: Crowdfunding and Capital Raising

Small businesses create jobs and make a significant contribution to BC’s economy. They need money to start, maintain, and grow their operations. A large portion of small business funding comes from entrepreneurs themselves and traditional funding sources such as bank loans. At some point, however, many businesses will turn to private investors.
As the government agency responsible for regulating capital raising, securities trading, and investor protection in BC, the BC Securities Commission wants to help small businesses understand how to raise money in a timely and efficient way and avoid unintended compliance problems.

The presentation will:

• Clarify how raising money from private investors differs from raising money in public markets
• Detail when securities laws apply to your business and what they are
• Explain how securities laws facilitate efficient and timely financings
• Walk you through a case study
• Point you to useful resources

Speakers will include Peter Brady, Director, Corporate Finance, BC Securities Commission and Leslie Rose, Senior Legal Counsel, Corporate Finance, BC Securities Commission.

About our Guest Speaker:

Peter Brady
Director, Corporate Finance
British Columbia Securities

Peter Brady is the Director of Corporate Finance for the British Columbia Securities Commission. His division oversees capital raising and corporate disclosure for British Columbia, including policy development and compliance. Prior to joining the BCSC, Mr. Brady served as General Counsel of Qtrade Financial Group, an integrated financial services company, for over five years. Prior to joining Qtrade, he worked as Senior Enforcement Counsel for the BCSC, and practiced securities, entertainment and corporate law at a public company and in private practice.

Mr. Brady has a law degree from the University of Victoria and a B.A. (Honours) from Queen’s University.

Leslie Rose
Senior Legal Counsel

Leslie Rose is Senior Legal Counsel in the Corporate Finance Division of the British Columbia Securities Commission. In the 15 years she has worked at the Commission, she has participated in many policy projects, particularly concerning capital raising exemptions, continuous disclosure obligations for venture issuers, and take-over bid requirements. She is the Chair of the CSA Prospectus Exemptions Committee. Leslie was called to the BC Bar in 1995. Before joining the Commission, Leslie practiced corporate finance, securities and corporate/commercial law primarily for public companies.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the Hub?
The Hub is conveniently located 7 minutes by foot from VCC-Clark Skytrain station. Hourly parking is available on both sides of the building which are metered by Impark. Alternatively, street parking is available on Great Northern Way, free of charge. There is also a $2 daily parking lot available at the end of the block where you will see a fleet of white trucks.
