Description

On Thursday, May 15, come join Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) and the Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood Community Health Centre (DNPCHC) to officially inaugurate the new legal aid services now being offered at the Centre.

About the DPNCHC-LAO partnership

The new innovative partnership between DPNCHC and LAO provides a unique opportunity for LAO to explore the delivery of legal services in a community health centre and to work holistically with the centre’s medical services, community programs, social agencies, and the community at large to serve low-income clients. This new service is funded in part from the $30 million over four years in additional funding from the provincial government. It’s part of a larger program that uses this provincial investment to improve outcomes for low-income individuals and families by promoting sustainable improvements to legal aid services.

Legal services for low-income Ontarians are now available by appointment. Three on-site legal aid staff lawyers offer consultations in immigration and family law Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Family law issues covered include child custody, separation, support payments and child protection. Lawyers can also provide two-hour emergency domestic violence consultations and arrange for no-fee mediation services for financially eligible separating couples. If necessary, the lawyers can also refer clients to legal aid’s criminal law services or to a community legal clinic for help with Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, the Landlord and Tenant Board and Canada Pension Plan appeals.
