About this event

Please note that this event will be recorded and available on the CHI YouTube channel.

Learn about patient and community engagement of sexual and gender minorities for research leading to health policy change by reviewing the engagement process used in a successful research program. Explore the challenges and lessons learned, and discover different strategies for engagement that you can apply in your own work. This module also provides a framework for engagement in research that contributes to health policy change.

CHI's Lunchtime Learning is open to all researchers, decision-makers, clinicians, patients and members of the public who want to learn more about the theory and practice of meaningful, inclusive, and safe patient and public engagement.

Learning Objectives

This session is for intermediate learners. Following this session, attendees should be able to:

· Understand the benefits of patient and community engagement in health research.

· Describe the principles of authentic patient and community engagement.

· Define intersectionality and consider how to incorporate the principles of intersectionality into your own patient and community engagement strategies.

· Appreciate the role of advocacy and development of public- and stakeholder-facing materials in research programs that aim to change health policy.

Discussion Lead

Dr. Murdoch Leeies is an organ donation, critical care medicine and emergency medicine specialist physician. Trained as a clinician investigator, he serves as the Director of Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Leeies leads a collaborative research program focused on promoting health equity in organ and tissue donation and transplantation. To ensure alignment with the target population, Dr. Leeies established a 2SLGBTQIA+ Patient & Public Advisory Team. This team collaborates on patient-centered research, exploring disparities faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in donation/transplantation. The goal is to generate insights informing reforms to structural/systemic health system elements perpetuating these inequities.
