"The Jay's Wing"

Alter Ego Theatre was founded by Ukrainian actor, director, and producer Snizhana Gukasian-Korobeinikova as an alternative theatrical voice in Calgary. It is a theatre without rigid boundaries—an experimental space where classical texts and unconventional perspectives coexist, where drama can shift into comedy, and where diverse genres and forms of dramatic theatre meet. Alter Ego Theatre is a place of exploration, emotional intensity, and the search for one’s own alter ego—both within oneself and within the characters on stage. The company is also dedicated to discovering unexpected and original theatrical forms for a wide range of stories, creating a space in which each narrative finds its own distinct stage language.______________Between 2023 and 2025, while living in Canada for just two years, Snizhana produced and directed three productions: The Muze, The Snow Queen, and Lost & Found. The Jay’s Wing became her fourth directorial work.As the Founder and Artistic Director of Alter Ego Theatre, Snizhana Gukasian-Korobeinikova is not only a leader within the Ukrainian theatre community—bringing together artists and collaborators—but also an active participant in Calgary’s theatrical community. In 2024, she received the annual CAT Award for Best Performance in a Leading Role in a play for role Sylvia (a co-production by Scorpio Theatre and Morpheus Theatre). We invite you to experience European theatrical tradition with Alter Ego Theatre. The Muze, The Snow Queen, Lost & Found. Alter Ego Theatre.

Alter Ego Theatre

Psychological drama based on novella by Ivan Franko. Performed in Ukrainian with English subtitles.

West Village Theatre

Join us at The Jay’s Wing. A story for anyone who has ever loved - and hesitated.Alter Ego Theatre, a Calgary-based theatre company bringing together artists from Ukraine and Canada, produced a psychological drama by Ivan Franko, written in 1905 and reimagined through the lens of contemporary sensibility. At the heart of the story are Maria and Khoma (Massino). Maria is emotionally rich, vibrant, impulsive, and drawn to intense experiences and vivid personalities. Romantic by nature, she seeks to understand the world - and gradually comes into contact with its harsher realities. Khoma, by contrast, is restrained and rational, oriented toward order, predictability, and self-control. He avoids emotional excess and strives for stability and balance. They are drawn to one another, yet their different understandings of love, freedom, and responsibility turn this connection into a test - where every choice carries a cost.In this stage interpretation, Maria perceives the jay as an alternative reflection of herself, an impulse that leads her toward choice. If you missed this production last season - or would love to see your favourite characters on stage again - this is your chance to experience our production nominated in 7 categories at the CAT Awards, including Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Production, Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role, and Outstanding Stagecraft, Outstanding Lighting Design, Outstanding Soundscape, Outstanding Adaptation.Join us for an intimate theatrical experience centered on choice and the responsibility that follows.Running time: aprox. 100 minutes, including intermission.Directed by Snizhana Gukasian-Korobeinikova
