Music of Displacement (September 17, 2022 at 7:30pm & September 18, 2022 at 2:30pm at the Annex)

In partnership with Kinbrace Refugee Housing and Support, Turning Point Ensemble opens its 22/23 season with a concert that will help shine a light on refugee support in Vancouver and draw attention to the global displacement crisis. As of 2022, more than 100 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to war, violence, persecution, and human rights abuses.

This concert features composers who have immigrated to Canada in the past decades and will include the premiere of Daughter of Absence composed by Tajik-Canadian Farangis Nurulla-Khoja for TPE cellist Isidora Njokovic and dedicated to the refugees of our time. Ukrainian-Canadian composer Anna Pidgorna's A Soul’s Keening for her Beloved for solo voice and strings, which fuses Ukranian folk vocalizations and classical vocal technique and is an intense and timely work. And music composed for TPE by Rudolf Komorous and Rita Ueda.

Angel's Bone (November 25 - 27, 2022 at the Orpheum Annex)

From some of Canada's most innovative music and opera organizations comes the Canadian premiere of Angel's Bone. This Pulitzer-prize winning opera by Du Yun and Royce Vavrek uses contemporary opera as a creative lens and collaborative tool to generate conversation and awareness around human trafficking of youth, happening in our Canadian communities.

Using multimedia design elements and a unique community engagement approach that brings together social workers, survivors, lawyers, human rights activists and opera artists, in co-presentation with several other organizations, Turning Point Ensemble brings a once-in-a-lifetime cross-cultural event, premiering in Vancouver (November 2022) and Toronto (Spring 2023).

Vienna, end of an era (March 25, 2022 at 7:30pm & March 26, 2022 at 2:30pm at the Annex)

Focusing on the nexus of the first decade of 20th century Vienna, Turning Point Ensemble unveils an expressive and sumptuous concert which looks back to romanticism while embracing the spirit of change and the modern era. With guest soprano Robyn Driedger Klassen, TPE performs the extraordinary Seven Early Songs of Alban Berg and the Orchesterlieder of Arnold Schoenberg. Looking back further, we include Schoenberg’s arrangement of Johann Strauss Kaiserwalzer and Anton Webern’s arrangement of Bach’s Ricercar from the Musical Offering. Looking ahead, the concert encompasses Webern’s masterful Concerto Op. 24 for piano and 8 instruments. The arrangements of large orchestral works for the transparent and crystalline instrumentation of Turning Point Ensemble offers listeners a precise and intimate representation of a music and era as if caught in a time capsule.
