The Squamish Nation is a proud and resilient
community, with a rich history and tradition deeply
rooted in the land and water that surrounds us. As
representatives of the Squamish Nation, we are
honored and thrilled to announce that our second
annual powwow will take place in July 2024. After
its successful return to the Capilano longhouse
Field last year, this event is expected to attract up to
4000 spectators over a span of three days.
With over 100 Indigenous and non-Indigenous
vendors showcasing their unique crafts and goods,
the powwow promises to be a cultural extravaganza
filled with mesmerizing drumming, singing, and
dancing performances, as well as hosting special
events.
Though powwow originated in the plains, the
tradition has been passed on and adopted by most
Indigenous Nations throughout Canada and the US.
The significance of this powwow extends beyond
just a mere event. It serves as a platform for us to
celebrate and preserve those traditions and customs
through the beautiful forms of art and culture. We
believe that it is crucial to pass the knowledge down
to future generations, and events like this allow us
to do just that.
The popularity of the powwow trail cannot be
denied, drawing in people from all corners of
Canada and the USA, and from around the globe.
It is heartening to see the widespread interest and
support for Indigenous cultures and traditions. It is
a testament to how far we have come in terms of
Truth and Reconciliation. As a committee from the
Squamish Nation, we feel immense pride in being
able to host such a significant event.
