Canada has a strong reputation as a desirable and welcoming destination for international students. Over the past several years, there has been a marked increase in the recruitment of international students to Ontario’s post-secondary institutions. These post-secondary institutions have consistently demonstrated that international students are critical to the long-term viability and success of Ontario’s university and college sectors. The contributions and lived experiences of international students are also integral in promoting the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion within post-secondary education.
There are unique challenges facing international students that have been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic; research consistently demonstrates that international students face overlapping challenges that negatively impact their experience as students as well as their mental health. Our virtual summit for staff in post-secondary institutions will focus on ways to support positive mental health outcomes for the international student population.
