About this event

  • 3 hours

We'll meet up at For Good Measure at 579 Niagara Street in James Bay at 11:30am. After introductions and a short presentation on Emily Carr, we'll board the bus and make a quick drive by her family home, the Carr House (we'll be back at 1pm for our scheduled guided tour), visit her nearby sister's houses (also historic sites), as well as the House of All Sorts, the Emily Carr Stone Footbridge in Beacon Hill Park, her father's store on Wharf Street, the Emily Carr Statue in front of the Empress Hotel, the Crystal Gardens where she made an important speech in 1930, her gravesite in Ross Bay Cemetery in Fairfield and other historic locations she painted, sketched and wrote about.

Along the way, you'll get to hear about some of the important people in her ilfe such as her four sisters, her handyman Willie Newcombe, her listening ladies, her childhood art instructors, her years in Vancouver, Ira Dilworth, Lauren Harris, The Group of 7, Woo, the Elephant, her lifelong friend Sophie Frank and her Indigenous guides for her two lengthy sketching trips in Haida Gwaii in and 1928.

We'll also visit her gravesite in Ross Bay Cemetery. Breathtaking ocean views, intricate pillars, stately mausoleums and towering trees are some of the charm of this historic Victorian-era cemetery, along with it being the resting place of Victoria's most beloved artist.

Then we'll head back to Carr House in James Bay for our scheduled one hour guided tour that starts at 1pm. Our final stop on the tour will be James Bay Inn where Emily died on March 4, 1945 and where we will see and hear about the legacy she left behind.

Whenever the time and location permits, we'll look at some of her most famous paintings and talk about what makes them so highly valued today. Her painting Crazy Stairs (1928) was purchased for $3.3 million by the Audain Gallery in 2013 , breaking her previous record and the third highest amount paid at auction for a Canadian artist and the highest paid at auction for a Canadian female artist. If only she knew!

We'll meet up at the outdoor patio at For Good Measure at 579 Niagara Street, at the corner of Government and Niagara, at 11:30am.
