Entry and Beginner Level Flamenco Dance Course

Learn to Dance Sevillanas

An essential must-know dance at any flamenco event, the Sevillanas are a lively and social flamenco-folk dance whose roots extend deeply into Andalusian Spanish culture. The Sevillanas are a great entry point for those interested in learning flamenco, but also a stand-alone dance many non-dancers enjoy learning due to their festive nature. In Andalusia, the southern region of Spain, and particularly in Seville, many people dance sevillanas every year at all types of events. the choreography is traditional and is roughly the same everywhere, meaning, if you learn sevillanas in halifax and go to Spain, you will be able to dance sevillanas with anyone in Spain as well. Dive into Spanish culture and experience the shared joy of this important cultural aspect of flamenco and Spanish culture.

WHAT TO WEAR

Come as you are for clothing, but bring a pair of indoor shoes for the studio. No flamenco shoes or special attire required. Bring the closest you have to a dressed shoe but avoid thick soles with lots of grip, sandals and for women, avoid open toe, wedges, stilettos or very high heels.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • low impact exercise, suitable for all ages and levels of fitness
  • learn about Spanish music and rhythm
  • yes, it is for men and women! Steps are exactly the same
  • classes are mentally and physically stimulating
  • most of all: fun!

NO PARTNER OR EXPERIENCED REQUIRED

  • sevillanas are danced in pairs, however dancers do not partner each other. During class students practise in rotation with different partners.

About Sevillanas

Although the Sevillanas have passed through various periods in the evolution of Spanish culture, it's important to know that these facets of Spanish culture are still alive today, and that Sevillanas is very much a part of each of them. Our student performance group, often performs sevillanas and students from the school are invited to join once they have learned the dance.
