About this event

What will be covered in this workshop?

There is a lot of buzz around the term autofiction. But what exactly is it? How is it different from memoir or creative nonfiction? Why read… or write it?

This workshop shows how autofiction allows us to blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, to liberate ourselves from the constraints of memoir — and to remix our narratives in delightful ways.

To begin, it will take you on a tour that samples bits of texts featuring well-known — as well as more unheard — contemporary authors. This exploration will help you see how you can: subject your biography to a twist, construct alter egos, re-imagine life events, re-configure form, call “the truth” into question — and create the most compelling literary, political and philosophical chaos.

In the second half of this workshop, you will be given writing tips, tricks, a prompt, and enough time to begin to craft your own autofictional slice of life, which you may share if you like.

What Participants Will Take Away

  • What autofiction does, and what it can do for you
  • Who is writing autofiction today and why you might want to
  • Prompts to practice using autofictional techniques
  • Space to share your work if you wish

There will be an optional opportunity to share.

Suitable for all levels.

Who is teaching this workshop?

Dr. Robyn Diner teaches literature and pop culture at Vanier College in Montreal, Canada. She is working on an autofiction collection called Badass Teacher Lady: Tales From the Classroom and Beyond. Most of her publications to date are a mashup of the personal, the academic and the literary. She lives in Montreal’s Mile End where she continues to be astonished at the price of thrift store clothes – nevermind groceries.
