4910 Lynell St

Pensacola is experiencing a housing and ecological crisis. The recent Carpenter Creek and Bayou Texar Watershed Management Plan has highlighted an urgent need to restore and protect the Carpenter Creek watershed. The Pensacola Affordable Housing Task Force has highlighted an urgent need to build 500 homes in 5 years in a diverse mix of unit types and levels of affordability.

SvN was recently invited to develop a new model of affordable housing in a residential neighborhood in the vicinity of the Creek. SvN Architects and Planners are developing a design that responds to the key recommendations of the Carpenter Creek and Bayou Texar Watershed Management Plan and provides a model to address the acute housing needs in Escambia County. Developing solutions to these crises will take innovative strategies, rooted in a deep understanding of local climate and building culture.

SvN’s Missing Middle housing design provides a way to gently integrate more population density into the fabric of existing residential neighbourhoods. This type of housing is compatible in scale to single family homes and provides a greater number and mix of housing units. SvN’s design is an example of how challenges of housing affordability and ecology can be integrated into a resilient, locally appropriate design solution.
