BLACK FUTURE LAWYERS WORKSHOP SERIES

The Inclusive Leader: Diversity & Inclusion in the Legal Profession - Business Case, Barriers and Strategies

Despite the increased emphasis and rhetoric on diversity and inclusion over the past decade, law remains one of the least diverse of any profession. Although more than 50% of Canadian law school graduates are women, women make up just 30% or less of law firm partners in Canada’s largest law firms. Although data on racialized and Indigenous lawyers, LGBTQ2S lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities is not as robust, we know the disparities and barriers are even more pronounced.

The research on the business case for diverse organizations is longstanding and incontrovertible. It is well-established that diverse and inclusive organizations are better positioned to tap emerging markets, creatively solve complex business problems, and have higher productivity rates. Clients are increasingly demanding that their firms reflect the diversity of the legal profession, as well as their own workforce and consumer base. Socially responsible community engagement is also shown to promote employee loyalty and engagement.

In this session, McCarthy Tétrault’s Chief Inclusion Officer, Nikki Gershbain, will explore the challenges and opportunities when it comes to creating a more diverse and inclusive legal profession. Throughout the presentation, she will explore:

  • The business and values case for diversity and inclusion in the legal profession
  • The barriers diverse lawyers experience when it comes to hiring, promotion and advancement in the profession
  • Meaningful strategies for moving the dial.
