Please join the Black Female Lawyers Network (BFLN) for an intimate discussion with Celina Caesar-Chavannes.

In this edition of the BFLN speakers series, we will be discussing with Celina her trajectory into politics and more broadly touching on:

  • the paths to a career in politics;
  • the qualities which are essential to have a successful career in politics; and
  • the unique challenges faced by women of colour in politics.

Celina Caesar Chavannes
MP Whitby & Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development

Celina Caesar-Chavannes is the Member of Parliament for Whitby.

Celina has deep roots in Whitby, where she lives with her husband and three children. Prior to her election, she was a successful entrepreneur and the recipient of the Toronto Board of Trade’s Business Entrepreneur of the Year for 2012 and the 2007 Black Business and Professional Association’s Harry Jerome Young Entrepreneur Award. In addition, she has worked with a variety of private, government and non-government organizations as a celebrated research consultant. This remarkable event will be moderated by Emily Mills.

Emily Mills knows what it’s like to ‘hustle’ and juggle it all – she is a senior communications officer at CBC Toronto; she is the founder of the How She Hustles network that connects 5000 diverse women through social media and special events; and, she’s a proud wife and mother. Emily's latest passion project is HERtory in Black, a Toronto-based digital photo series of 150 inspiring black women that was featured nationally by the CBC for Black History Month and Canada's 150th anniversary.

This year, Emily was also named a CivicAction DiverseCity Fellow - one of 25 rising city leaders making an impact across the GTHA - and is a champion for female entrepreneurs through SheEO. In 2015, Emily was nominated for a YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction Award, named one of 100 Black Women to Watch in Canada and received the inaugural Women’s Empowerment Award at the Black Canadian Awards.
