Bridging The Gender Gap With Design
Event Information
About this Event
After earning a Master of Engineering from the University of Alberta, Geeta Belas launched into a career with the United Nations. Since 2008, she has delivered international field support in Sudan, Kuwait, Iraq and Colombia. In these peacekeeping operations, she applied her engineering training to enhance the security of UN facilities & infrastructure.
Building on this experience, she is now based in New York, working to improve living and working conditions for women peacekeepers. Her group redesigns field camps, including accommodations, washrooms and recreational facilities. By enhancing privacy and security and considering the psychological effects of architecture, they are supporting the UN’s drive for gender parity.
Geeta Belas is Chief of the Elsie Initiative for Field Missions’ Facilities & Infrastructure at UN Headquarters in New York.
