Event Details

This is a beginner level workshop for teen girls ages 13-17 years old. This workshop is BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop) and all participants must bring their own lunch.

Is the girl in your life interested in using code as a creative outlet? Curious about how computers work?

Teens Learning Code, in conjunction of Beakerhead - a smash up of art, science and engineering, are proud to present for a full day of developing. Software and Circuits: Light it up with Software! In this combined hardware & software workshop, Robyn Schmidt, a software engineer at Garmin a wearable tech giant, will explain circuits, controlling outputs with embedded software using the nRF52
(System on a Chip or a small computer) Module with a brief insight into wireless technology.

In this workshop, girls will go through multiple exercises that will allow them to build both on the computer and off the computer, and will further educate them on important aspects of electricity and physics. As a group, we’ll create schematics using breadboards and discuss fundamental terms such as current and voltage. Then, we’ll make our creations come to life through code, and build circuits that output light, and are being controlled through inputs such as switches, timers and wireless signal.

Girls with interest in hands-on activities will get to explore MCUs, integrated circuits, and computer programming in a beginner-friendly way and take their skills into the classroom and at home.

Hardware is provided for the duration of the workshop, and girls will be able to take their microcontrollers home.

Many thanks to our sponsors, Dynastream Innovations & Garmin!
