Climate Action 101

Workshop Description

As we face the impacts of the global climate emergency, the world is up against a ticking clock to keep global warming below 1.5ᵒC. In the wake of much needed systemic change, the question arises for many: ‘What can I do about it’? As a staff member at SFU, no matter your role, you are in a unique position to engage and champion climate action at our institution. This course focuses on providing foundational knowledge about climate change, climate justice and action. The course will help SFU staff improve climate literacy, build capacity and skills for collaborating on climate solutions, and empower staff to take on advocacy and leadership roles needed to take on the climate crisis.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand and knowledgeably discuss the climate crisis, sustainability, climate action, and climate justice 
• Learn what SFU is doing as an institution to tackle climate change and university greenhouse gas emissions
• Identify connections with your work and opportunities for action
• Learn to leverage your power within your role to forward climate action and climate justice at SFU

Facilitators: Rita Steele is SFU’s Manager of Campus Sustainability. Overseeing the Campus Sustainability portfolio, Rita implements university-wide initiatives in support of SFU’s strategic sustainability objectives and 2025 Plan. She champions the integration of sustainability considerations into management policies, procedures, and systems within University operations and connects faculty, staff, students, and stakeholder groups to collaborate on sustainability solutions.
