About this event

  • 3 hours

The Community Connects series strengthens the links between members of the diverse multi-disciplinary Brampton creative community while fostering communal learning and knowledge sharing as well as developing individual members' facilitation skills. We are empowering Brampton artists and creatives to craft programming specifically for our community by our community.

This workshop will address the need for mindfulness and meditation in creative industries. For many creatives, the drain of the work can become a challenge in addition to a project's actual deliverables. With the help of MyStand, an organization that focuses on mindfulness and meditation as tools to help youth overcome their situations and circumstances, we will explore how these same tools can help us navigate the complex spaces of creating.

Through short exercises to introduce mindfulness tactics, participants can share reassurance and build some faith that they too can work towards their goals with a clear and healthy mind.

Tactics will include, but not be limited to, meditation exercises, discussion and journaling, and breathing exercises

Taken together, these tactics will acquaint participants with the benefits mediation and mindfulness.

The intended audience of the workshop is creatives and creatives of colour within Brampton and the GTA. However, anyone who is interested in meditation, the mind, and self-improvement, whether young or old, is welcome.

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS:

The Spades Family is an organization and collective led by artist and entrepreneur TCSpades. Together, we have had many successful projects within the entertainment and music industry which began with content creation for brands and artists such as Roy Woods from OVO Sound, World of Dance Canada, and more, leading to two successful EP Releases, a music catalogue amassing over 600,000 streams on Spotify alone, sold out shows at The Rose Theatre, multiple performances at the SXSW Music Festival as well as one at NXNE, and more. What started as a brand dealing with clothing and merchandise on the side of music has grown into an organization with the goal of storytelling on bigger scales to spread positive messages and creating opportunities as big as the ones that lead to the creation of The Spades Family.

MyStand helps youth identify, build, and maintain positive and healthy relationships with others and themselves. Founded in 2013, MyStand was created to provide holistic and culturally relevant mentorship supports that are sensitive to the unique needs of vulnerable youth. MyStand recognizes and focuses its energy on providing the direct benefits of mentorship in helping youth with self-development through assessments, workshops and mentorship.

Organized by

The Brampton Arts Organization is a registered non-profit that champions Brampton’s diverse arts, culture and creative industries and advocates for the #BramptonArtist. We work to build a thriving, confident, valued, and empowered creative scene by offering a range of programs, services and resources. In this, BAO is a key partner in fulfilling the City of Brampton’s strategic vision and Culture Master Plan.

Throughout the year, we offer free in-person and virtual programming for all creative disciplines. These programs focus on helping artists build and professionalize their practices. We also create opportunities for artists to show their work through regular calls. In addition to these programs for individual creatives, we offer programs for Brampton-based creative businesses and arts and culture organizations.
