Interested in teaching art classes, but don’t know where to start? Whether you are a professional artist or an emerging artist, teaching doesn’t always come naturally. In this afternoon workshop, we will look at: planning lessons, how to be prepared, working with children vs working with adults, long term courses vs short mini workshops and many more tips on how to be a successful teacher of your art form! The goal of this workshop is to have you feeling confident about taking those first steps to start teaching.

Instructor: Marla Benton

Marla Benton is a ceramic artist and educator living and working in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. Benton has balanced creating art in her studio along with teaching ceramic workshops. Originally from small town Ontario, she attended the Ontario College of Art & Design, where she found clay her preferred medium. After transferring to the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Benton completed her degree with a major in ceramics. A few years later, she earned her second degree from Nipissing University (BED). In 23 years of teaching, Marla has taught: in the public system as a classroom teacher, in a Waldorf school as a grade teacher and art specialist, summer camps for children ages 5 through to teenager, adult mini workshops to long term courses, and from one- on-one to large groups of 50+ participants.

These workshops are presented in partnership with Visual Arts Nova Scotia and funded by the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage.
