About the Workshop Series

In this workshop, we will discuss and apply elements of good scientific data visualization. Participants will work with published as well as their own figures in this collaborative session. No prior experience with specific tools is required.

You will:

  • learn the basic elements of good visualizations
  • discuss how to tell a story with data
  • critique published figures from the scientific literature
  • peer critique and improve your own figure


Pre-requisites

None. Please bring a printed copy of a figure from your own work.


Instructors

Dr. Patrick Schloss is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Michigan. As the author of mothur and active educator in reproducible research and R, Dr. Schloss brings over 10 years of experience in complex data visualization, particularly in the fields of microbiome research and microbial ecology.

Dr. Kim Dill-McFarland is a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of British Columbia as well as an ECOSCOPE Fellow. Dr. Dill-McFarland teaches undergraduate data science and facilitates the ECOSCOPE R workshop series.
